Surrey is a diverse coastal city located on the Strait of Georgia on Canada’s western coast, just 23 kilometers southeast of Vancouver. While many of Surrey’s residents work in Vancouver, Surrey’s amenities and reasonably priced housing make the trip into Vancouver more than worth the travel time.
Surrey’s climate is moderate with mild winters and sunny summers. While it rarely snows, both winter and spring are often very rainy. Residents have many choices when it comes to living arrangements, from beach homes and farms to apartments in active urban centres. Four SkyTrain stops allow quick and easy travel to Vancouver, and there are plans in the works to expand SkyTrain access to more parts of the city. For those not near a SkyTrain stop, over 1300 bus stops provide transportation throughout Surrey.
Away from home, residents can take advantage of Surrey’s 600 parks with 277 walking trails. Surrey is home to several golf courses and 12 city pools, both indoor and outdoor. The city hosts annual children’s festivals, a tree lighting festival in late November, and Western Canada’s largest Canada Day celebration. Surrey’s coast boasts several sandy beaches dotted with concession stands and cafes. For those looking for something less close to nature, there are multiple shopping malls and community centres in each of Surrey’s six communities.
Surrey is a shining example of Canada’s multiculturalism. A large percentage of the over 500,000 residents can trace their heritage to South Asia. There are also large Chinese and Filipino communities, and two of Surrey’s communities have large populations of European immigrants. While approximately 50% of the population identifies as Christian, there are significant number of Sikh, Muslim, and Jewish citizens as well. Churches, temples, mosques, and synagogues are scattered throughout the city, giving residents from a variety of religious backgrounds a place to worship.
This diverse population brings diverse experiences to the city. Local restaurants serve food from every part of the world, and religious and cultural celebrations are held by Surrey’s citizens throughout the year. While the overall population is aging, Surrey welcomes many young immigrants each year who drive progress and innovation while keeping the city vibrant and modern.
The Surrey school district is one of the largest in British Columbia. Free public education is offered at over 100 elementary schools and 20 secondary schools. Three adult education centres and a variety of online programs are also available to provide education and growth opportunities for all members of the community. Surrey also offers several independent schools with varying approaches, and three local universities offer higher education opportunities in a variety of disciplines.
Surrey is a growing city with many opportunities and activities for people of all ages and backgrounds. Whether you are a nature lover or an urbanite, a natural born Canadian or a recent immigrant, you are sure to find a place to belong in Surrey’s diverse culture. Our
